How to Use an Espresso Machine

Literally, espresso means coffee extraction and is usually done by forcing pressurized, hot water through the coffee grind using an espresso machine. Here are some tips on how to pull espresso shots from your espresso machine.

First, start by familiarizing yourself with your espresso machine. Most at-home machines are very basic and usually feature a steam wand along with a brewing cup. The cup, often attached to a long handle, twists into a bracket above the drip tray. The steam wand sticks out of the side of the espresso machine. Knowing how to control these items is the first step.

Once you have examined your espresso machine, you can start producing your coffee. Espresso can be produced from any kind of bean, blend or roast. To start, make sure your machine is turned off. Unscrew the cap so you can pour enough water to brew your espresso but do not overfill. Be careful not to unscrew the lid if any of the switches on the machine is on.

Once you have filled your espresso machine with water, tightly screw back the lid back on the machine. Then fill the brewing cup with the coffee grinds. It usually has a measure that tells you what kind of espresso you are preparing.

Next, remove any grounds found on the sides of the filter. Then place the filter holder on the machine. The texture of the grind affects the taste of the espresso so be sure a grind that is smooth to the touch (a little finer than sugar but not quite powdered).

After filling the brewing cup, screw it tightly into the brackets to hold it in place. Place a receptacle under the brewing cup then turn on the espresso machine and after a sufficient amount of time, the water will be heated and forced through the coffee grind. The coffee brew would then start trickling into the receptacle.

The ideal espresso shot is the one that is rich in color and forms a brown foamy cream, called crema, on top of the coffee as it starts to drip on the cup. When the crema is starting to appear white, hastily remove the cup from the machine because this indicates that the liquid with the best taste is no longer exiting your espresso machine. Most espresso shots are served with milk or are diluted using other beverages to dilute the level of caffeine.
