Kendwa’s lack of recreational infrastructure makes it the perfect spot to relax. Travelers looking to cool off after a major trek or long journey will find the basic comforts here – lazy hammocks, soft sands, and perfectly-temped waters – to be the perfect therapy to ease any sore muscles. A leisurely walk along the more than 2 miles of beach can also do any traveler wonders.

The beach comes alive, however, during the full moon, so those looking to escape the crowds should plan their travels to the village around the lunar calendar. Visitors who are in the mood for a wild romp will find no shortage of fun here, where party-goers dance, play music, and perform late into the night.

Those wanting to extend their time here can choose from a range of accommodations. Visitors can stay simplistic with lodging in a banda, a thatched-roof hut, sink into a plush bed at a beachside resort, or stay cozy in a quaint stone cottage above it all in the neighboring hills.

Although many islands are home to some of these beloved giant birds, none are as spectacular a spot to watch the birds as Pozo de los Flamingos.

Found near the town of Puerto Villamil, Pozo de los Flamingos, or Flamingo Pond, is a great place for travelers to spend a relaxing afternoon or day observing the local wildlife. In addition to many flamingos, the pond is also home to black-necked stilts, a tuxedo-colored bird with pink legs that stretch on for miles.
Photographers often find the pond to be a great spot to take pictures as well. Due to the flamingo’s striking colors and tall stature, photographers find the bird to be among the most rewarding to photograph. However, because some birds are skiddish, it is recommended that photographers bring their longer lenses with them.

For more waterside photo ops, travelers can head to Darwin’s Lake, a beautiful body of water that is home to the giant pinks and many other well-loved Galapagos avian species.

The Inca Trail remains a challenging course for even the most seasoned of trekkers, with its welcome valley declines always complemented by equally hearty slopes to climb.

The trail’s highest point is at Warmiwanusca, or Dead Woman’s Pass. Looking up at the pass, one can understand its daunting name: The mountain peaks of the area clearly resemble the body of a woman lying face-up along the valley floor.

Hikers must trek through a series of arduous switchbacks before they even reach the pass, which is located 13,774 feet above sea level. The ascent to the pass is among the toughest of the trail, and challenges individuals to climb nearly 4,000 feet for this leg of the trail.

From these heights, it is easy for trekkers to suffer from altitude sickness, so hikers must pay attention to the speed at which they attack the slopes. While some travelers may simply want to power through this difficult part of the climb, these individuals will likely be dearly paying for this decision near the summit.

While a number of parks and trails provide ample places to spot the nation’s ground-bound wildlife, there are much fewer chances for travelers to experience the life of those species of the canopy.

At Braulio Carrillo National Park, however, the canopy becomes a main walkway. The park has a series of cable cars that move through the park’s canopy, providing more than 1.6 miles of trails in the sky. The cars have large, open sides, which allow park guests to get unadulterated panoramic views of all the species of flora and fauna this tropical canopy has to offer.

Travelers looking for a more challenging vista point can choose to climb Volcan Barva, a 9,534-foot volcano which remains only accessible by foot. The trails, which can be arduous at times, is quite beautiful as well, with many of the pathways leading to crater lakes along the way. However, routes to the summit can often be rocky and unkempt, so quality gear is encouraged for any hiker.

However, for those with a strong penchant for reptilians, the best place a visitors can go is Cerro Dragon.

Also known as Dragon Hill, Cerro Dragon is a sanctuary for many rare and endangered creatures on the archipelago, including the Galapagos land iguana. Almost wiped out by feral dogs that were introduced by humans to the island, the large reptiles are now able to eat, sleep and reproduce in peace at the Charles Darwin Research Center due to the controlled populations of the dogs.

Getting to the sanctuary can be good exercise. Found on the northwestern side of Santa Cruz Island, Cerro Dragon gets its name from its uncanny resemblance to a large, green dragon. The lovely trails around and leading to the center give guests multiple opportunities to see the land iguanas, who often surprise guests with their cactus-eating skills.

The trails also feature a number of other popular fauna and flora from the area, including several bird species like flamingos, yellow warblers and some Darwin finches.

The Olympic Peninsula’s Elwha River is running free. Pretty much. The Elwha dam is down and the Glines dam is being chipped away (see the image above); it should be completely gone within a year or 18 months.

Still, you don’t need to wait to get out your cigars. For the first time in about 100 years, salmon fry are hatching above the dams. These are the offspring of adult Coho salmon that were placed in the river last spring. The fry that survive should be making their journey to the Strait of Juan de Fuca by spring of 2013.

Starting today, crews are halting work that disrupts the water for the next two months, to give the fish a window of clear water, free of the normally high levels of silt and turbidity that dam removal causes in the river.

You can follow all the action on the Olympic National Park’s Dam Removal Blog or on the project’s Facebook page. If you’re a river and/or engineering geek, the images of the dam removal process — and historical shots that show the river pre-dams — are definitely worth your time. You’ll see deltas emerge as the lakes, formed by the dams, begin to drain. Native American artifacts have already been uncovered.

This project, the largest dam removal in history, is especially important to the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, who depended on the hearty salmon and trout populations that once stretched along the river’s length and that were limited to the first five miles of river, below Elwha Dam, after the dams were installed without providing any fish passage.

Check back later this month for an interview with Ben Knight, whose upcoming documentary DamNation will tell some of the Elwha’s story but focuses on the larger topic of dam removal and river restoration across the country. Hopefully, we’ll get a peak at the film trailer, too.

Need to get away? Far away? Where you, and maybe someone else, can spend some time on an endless beach and in a whole lot of water? Here you go.

It’s time for a real vacation in your own shack by the sea, where the sun is hot, the waves are perfect, and checking your Twitter feed isn’t an option. When it comes to pure, hedonistic escapism, it’s tough to beat these ten places, whether you’re looking to walk long white sand beaches where elephants swim nearby or dive with eagle rays and recover with a dinner of recently spearfished red snapper. Go now, before reason takes hold.
